The printer said

“The file is the wrong size.”

Short answer

The printer needs the file at the exact finished size (the trim size) plus bleed, and in the same proportions as the product. Scaling up or down is fine when the proportions match; when they don’t, for example A4 to US Letter or a square post to a 4 × 6 in flyer, the layout has to be rearranged, never stretched.

Why printers ask for this

Print sizes are fixed by the paper, the press and the cutter. A file at the wrong size either gets scaled by the printer, so it may come out with white borders or cropped edges, or rejected outright.

Proportion is the real trap. A4 (210 × 297 mm) and US Letter (8.5 × 11 in) look alike but aren’t the same shape. Neither is a phone screen and a poster. Forcing one into the other stretches logos and faces, which everyone notices.

How to resize artwork for print without distorting it

  1. Get the exact trim size and bleed from your printer, for example 4 × 6 in plus 0.125 in bleed: a 4.25 × 6.25 in document.
  2. Check the proportions: divide width by height for both your design and the new size. If they match, scale the whole design proportionally.
  3. If they don’t match, start a new document at the right size and rearrange: move blocks, extend backgrounds, re-crop photos. Never stretch.
  4. Keep text and logos inside the safe area, at least 0.125 in from the trim.
  5. Export a PDF with bleed, and print it at 100% on office paper to check that the size is right.

Or send it to us

  • Rebuild the layout at your printer’s exact size and bleed
  • Re-flow text and re-crop images so nothing is stretched or squashed
  • Adapt between A4, US Letter and other standards, or from a social post to print
  • Set up multiple sizes from one design if you need them (counted per file)

Questions

Can’t the printer just scale it?
If the proportions match, often yes. If they don’t, scaling leaves white bars or crops off edges, which is why they send it back.
How much does it cost to resize for several sizes?
Each output file is one fix at $25. A full campaign resize (a flyer, poster, social and banner set) is quoted as one job in the chat.
What size is a standard business card?
3.5 × 2 in in the US, 85 × 55 mm in the UK and Europe, and 90 × 50 mm in the UAE, plus bleed on each side.
