“That’s a picture, not a print file”: How to turn an AI image into a print file

Short answer

An image from ChatGPT or another AI tool is one flat picture, usually with too few pixels for the print size. Its words are part of the picture rather than real text, it has no bleed, and any QR code in it may not scan. A photo-style image at a small size can sometimes print as it is. Anything with small text, a logo or a large print size usually needs rebuilding as a real print file, with the AI image as the guide.

Why printers ask for this

Print sharpness comes down to pixels divided by print size. OpenAI lists 1024 × 1536 pixels as a standard portrait size, which is about 120 ppi on a letter-size flyer, and printers usually ask for 300 ppi. Sizes vary by tool and keep changing, so check your own file rather than assuming.

The bigger problem is that everything is one layer of pixels. The words are painted in, so they can’t be edited and small type prints soft. AI tools can also misspell words in ways that are easy to miss. A logo is pixels too, and a QR code may only be a drawing of one, which looks right and scans to nothing.

The image also won’t match the job. AI tools make their own shapes rather than your trim size, nothing runs past the edge for bleed, and the color is usually RGB. A 3D picture of a box is further off still, because a printer needs flat artwork on the dieline.

How to turn an AI image into a print file

  1. Check the pixels first. Divide the image’s width in pixels by the print width in inches, then aim for 300. A letter flyer with 0.125 in bleed needs about 2625 × 3375 pixels, and a business card with bleed about 1125 × 675. The free DPI calculator does the math.
  2. If it’s short and the image is a photo or illustration with no small text, enlarge it. In Photoshop: Image → Image Size, turn Resample on, choose Preserve Details 2.0, enter the size at 300 ppi, then check it at 100%. This estimates detail rather than recovering it, so it only goes so far.
  3. Set up a new document at the trim size with 0.125 in (3 mm) bleed in Illustrator, InDesign or Canva, and place the image so it runs past the edge on every side. If it stops short, extend or crop it before going further.
  4. Remove the text from the picture and type every word again as real text. Proofread it against what you meant to say, not against the image, because AI spelling errors are easy to read past.
  5. Replace the logo with your original vector file. If you don’t have one, redraw it. Image Trace can work on simple shapes, but check the result closely.
  6. Delete any QR code in the image and make a real one with a QR code generator, as a vector if you can. Test it with a phone on a printed copy, at the right size.
  7. Export a print-ready PDF, in CMYK if your printer asks for it, then run it through the free print-ready checker. Ask for a proof if the job is large.

Questions

Will my printer accept an AI image?
Often, if the file meets their specs: enough pixels, the right size and bleed. Many shops judge the file rather than the tool that made it, but some have their own policies, so ask. Expect them to send it back or charge to fix it if it falls short.
Can’t I just upscale it?
Upscaling helps with photos and illustrations, because it adds believable detail. It won’t fix text or logos: blurry or misspelled words stay wrong, only bigger. It also won’t add bleed, correct the shape or make a QR code scan.
How is an AI image different from a Canva file?
A Canva design has real text and separate elements, so it can usually be exported as a print-ready PDF with bleed. An AI image is one flat picture, so those parts have to be rebuilt first.
I have an AI picture of my box. Can you make it printable?
Yes. We use the picture as the design reference and rebuild the artwork flat on your printer’s dieline, with the text, barcode and finishes on their own layers. Send the picture and the dieline in the chat.
How much does it cost to rebuild an AI image?
From $75, depending on how much is in it. You get a fixed price before anything starts, so send the image and the print size in the chat.
